Romance, Part 2

That said, I actually do know couples who have met here at the harbor, and who are still together years later. So you never know.

Daffodils

Forgot to mention that on the same day I found a whistle on my door, another neighbor surprised me with flowers. Yup, lucky, that's me.

Linen Shopping Bag

I'm really into linen. You may have noticed. So of course I'm coveting this bag. (Tricia, don't you want to make some shopping bags?)

Romance

One thing I've realized while living at the harbor (yes, another lesson learned): If you become involved with someone who also lives here, while it's certainly convenient... when it's over, you still run into each other. Which, you know, may be okay, but may not. Just something to keep in mind.

Amsterdam Houseboat

Do you get the sense that I like peeking into houseboats in Amsterdam? (Especially those with white walls and lots of windows.) Click here for more pics and info.

Wind and Stupidity

Lesson learned: Rugs drying on the boat's railing. Left the harbor. Wind came up. Oops. (Thank you, nice mystery neighbor, for saving them. And for rolling up my aft deck shade, too. And RC, for snagging my rug as it floated by.)

Today, I'd rather be here.

Clothing & Upholstery Brush

I spend my life surrounded by, and covered in, yellow dog hair. Supposedly, this brush from The Laundress is masterful at removing lint and hair and fur. I just wish it wasn't $60.

Ducks

Well, that's new. (Note the shade. Were they there because the sudden 75-degree day was a shock to their little duck systems?)

Nautical Kitchen

This Manhattan kitchen is shaped like a boat. (More info and pics here.)

White Frames

Sometimes I think I should have gone with white frames rather than black. And maybe just black-and-white photos and such.

Barking Lily

Yesterday I left the harbor for three hours, and when I came back, Lily was barking on the boat. Nothing was wrong; I found just a silly barking dog, so thought maybe it was a one-time deal. Then I remembered she'd done the same thing once before -- almost exactly a year ago. So now I'm hoping it's a once-a-year thing.

Linen Shade

I really like this simple linen shade. Not that I need one, but if I did...

Lost and Found

How anyone who lives on a very small houseboat can lose something is beyond me. After all, in small spaces, everything has its place. But a few days ago I lost something, and although it wasn't earth-shattering, I still tore the boat apart until I finally found it. Clearly, it's time to re-think my storage.

Time

I've realized that the amount of time I spend thinking about doing projects on the boat is inversely proportional to how long the projects actually take.

Window as Room Divider

I still like the idea of a window or door as a room divider.

Stockholm Floating Home

A 1909 barge. Stockholm. 1600 sq. ft. That's all I know. (But doesn't that canoe on the ceiling look like this? And check out those sleeping nooks, that wooden tub, and the green bathroom tile.) More pics here.

Great window seat.

Aft Deck Shade

A couple of weeks ago I put up this white slatted PVC shade. It's on my aft deck, and allows light in while giving me privacy. It also feels like I've added another room to the boat. The catch, though, is that it has to be rolled up in the wind, and has already torn a bit because I wasn't home when the wind came up. Anyone have ideas for alternatives that are durable, weatherproof, low maintenance, and cheap?

Table of Blue Colors

Just because. (Reminds me of this.)

Semi-Gloss Paint

I usually touch up the wall paint on my boat every few months, when it starts looking a bit grimy -- which happens in such a small space (marks from Lily's constant running-into-walls, nail holes that need to be patched, places where the paint's come off for one reason or another). I'm wondering if I should try Semi-Gloss Natura, rather than Eggshell. Pros: More durable, easier to clean. Cons: More glare, shows imperfections. Thoughts?

A Bunch of Flowers

If I feel like adding colour, I simply buy a bunch of flowers.
For me to feel good, all I need is to be surrounded by
neutral hues and clean, simple lines.

American Whistle

Every once in a while it occurs to me that I should probably wear a whistle (like this one from KIOSK) when I take Lily out very late at night. That way, if we fall in, I can get someone's attention. But I never get around to doing it. I hope I haven't just jinxed us.

Eccentric

A couple of days ago my sister said that people who live on boats are eccentric. And she pointed out that yes, that includes me.

Cabin on the Water

Intrigued by Tricia's blue house. About as close as you can get to being a floating home without being one.

Dark Wood Floors

When I re-do my floors, eventually, maybe I should go with dark wood. I love the contrast with all the white, like in the dining room of Tricia Foley's Long Island house.
